Free SD Memory Card Recovery is a freeware program that recovers deleted and damaged files from SD and other memory cards.

Free SD Memory Card Recovery is absolutely free to use, as much as you want and as often as you want. If you work with memory cards a lot, this feature can be valuable to have in your toolbox. The way this program works is that it scans a card completely, and then, presents you with a list of files that may be recoverable. It also filters potentially recoverable photos into a separate list. That makes it easier since you don’t have to sift through data files and the like.

The scanning process is reasonably fast and not prone to slowdowns. The UI also has pause, resume and stop options. Modern computers should multitask fine as this runs, but on a slower computer, a pause can be useful when you have something else to do. This program works with practically any memory card. That includes SD, miniSD, MicroSD and SDHC. Other formats supported include MMMC, Compact Flash, CF Type I and II, SmartMedia, xD Picture card, Pro-HG, Memory Stick Pro and much more.

Free SD Memory Card Recovery tends to be quite good at recovering images. Even images that have been partially overwritten can be reclaimed by the program through rebuilding. Beyond images, the app is more miss than hit. It seems to lack a sophisticated recovery engine and has a hard time recovering other file types that have been overwritten to any degree. Another potential issue with the program is that the optimization for SD memory cards isn’t evident. Are SD memory cards much different to recover from than an SSD? If this app doesn’t work, users may look to other more robust recovery solutions. Most of those work with SD cards as well as hard and solid-state drives.
